While instant feedback would be wonderful, this is unrealistic regarding job applications. Patience is a must; the average waiting time to hear back after applying for a job is one to two weeks. In some cases, the process can take even longer, and you may hear back from recruiters after three to four weeks if the review process is more complex.

Several factors will come into play regarding wait times, including hiring urgency and decision routes. In most cases, however, you should receive feedback after about two weeks, and there are things you can do to speed up the process and hear back sooner.

 

What Can I Do While Waiting to Hear Back?

While waiting to hear back, continue applying for jobs, as this will take your mind off the wait, and you may even find a better offer. You should also review the job posting because this can provide clues, as recruiters sometimes include information about the waiting time and whether they’d like to be contacted. Go back to the job posting to see if there is still time for the news to come or if you should reconsider a previous point. Always play by the rules; if the posting specifically states a waiting time, do not contact them before this time.

If you have waited a couple of weeks and the waiting time mentioned in the posting has passed, you can write a follow-up email to determine whether you are still being considered for the job. Find your hiring manager or recruiter's contact information and include a clear subject line and humbling message and your contact information. You can ask about their decision timeline and kindly ask them to respond.

 

How to Speed Up the Process

Finding a job is usually not a one-time thing, and you will have to repeat the process at some point. If you want to speed up your application process, make sure you do the following:

  • Do not use generic resumes because these will not be considered. A targeted resume crafted for the specific position is a must to help you stand out. 
  • Tailor your resume to the job description by incorporating the job keywords on the listing.
  • Include only recent and relevant work experience.
  • List your achievements on your resume—use power words, tangible numbers and data that paint a clear picture of your impact. Leave the descriptions of job responsibilities to the hiring managers. 
  • Do not be afraid to add extra sections to your resume, as this will allow you to use more keywords.
